Former Squad member
My name is Donovan J, I am 15 years old. I was born December 30, 2001 in Charleston, South Carolina. As a kid growing up I’ve always dreamed of changing something major in the world I live in. So major it would change how much blood we have on our hands. If I was to change anything in this world it would be the hearts of everyone who live here, no matter good or bad, young or old. If I were able to I would change their hearts and make them full of love and purity. Wars, racism, and hatred would then not exist.
This summer, I got the opportunity to give back to the community of Asheville through an internship I was offered by Self-Help Credit Union and Hood-Huggers International. We helped create a financial literacy program that teaches youth and young adults about the basis of financial literacy by teaching tips for budgeting, saving, and investing.
I am now a member of Word on The Street and I am proud of what we’ve helped bring to the community of Asheville. Like a grant we recently helped to get for the community of $500,000 annually for the next two years, after a team from Word on the Street, which I was apart of, created a documentary specifically exposing our opinions and the community’s opinions on the issue of racism in our schools, justice system, communities, and etc. I was glad to apart of that and that is why I am a member of Word on the Street.
